He told me to check around for the lowest price, but after calling all of the big names & getting told it will COST me $30 - $60 to get an ESTIMATE, or that most were too busy to come out the same day, I got a hold of Active Plumbing.
I am a big supported of small family owned business, if this would help them get that first "street side" dig under their belts for their business portfolio, then I am all for it. Boy am I glad I did.
I was a bit upset that, because it was my lines & the water company hadn't ever informed me of their water protection insurance, the bill may run up around $10,000 due to the leak being under the sidewalk & the street. This is typical, as one of the big name contractors came by & shot me the same estimate, but said it may go above $10,000.
Active Plumbing is a small outfit that started within recent years (2008) when the owner decided to start his own company after being a union contractor for the first part of his career.
These guys are what we call "good old fashioned American workers" those that are supposed to be honest & upright, working hard & showing that wholesome spirit that our nation was supposed to be founded on. In a day & age when everything comes from China cheaper & people want everything handed to them, the American work ethic is a hard thing to find anymore.
After the water company sends a guy out to look it over & Bill Schmidt from the city inspection team comes by (great guy by the way) he recommends that I shop around for a contractor to come estimate the project.
I decided to give them the job for several reasons, first, as their own (family owned) company, they did not have any "street side" digs under their belts, although he was very experienced from his being a union contractor. Second, he was honest & third, he showed up when all of the big name companies put me off & kept calling to reschedule.
His machinery operator "Junior" came, who has 35+ years of experience & is Rob's grandfather, then one other employee (forgive me, can't remember his name).
Finally, they cleaned up their mess very well & shook my hand at the start of the job & at the end.
Long story, well, not short... Active plumbing did a grade A job, were friendly & professional the entire time & here comes the best part:
Nonetheless, work started quickly.
It took a little while to get everything in motion, as road closed signs had to be put up, paper work needed filing, etc. Pretty much just stuff that was out of their hands.
I live just west of the Village of East Davenport (old lead water pipes prone to leaks) & did not have insurance on my water lines (get it before it's too late people!) & what happens? I develop a leak at my curb box shut off valve.
I called multiple plumbing companies in the quad cities area. Most of them required a quote fee, active plumbing did not and their quote was comparable to other plumbing companies. They willingly worked around our other multiple project we had going on. The one thing that I did not like so much is they are very busy with multiple jobs that they were not able to get to mine until later in the day and did not stay for very long. However I am pleased with the work they did and how flexible they were with our kitchen renovation.
Thanks Rob & the Active Plumbing team, you have made a repeat customer out of me & I (have already been) will continue to recommend you to everyone I know.
These guys were at my house from sun up until sun down working to get the job done & due to the ground being so thoroughly frozen this time of year, it took two days to complete (better than the big name contractor working on my neighbor's lines down the street, they were there for 3-4 days & left it a MESS!). Also, the locate marks got covered by snow & ice right away, then some neighborhood kid took out the flags, so the locates needed called in again...
Mr. Wriedt (who you will come to know as Rob) was fast, friendly, & honest.
I was leery at first, as it was an 800 number & thought maybe it was a national referral service, but lo & behold, they were local & gave free estimates!
All 3 of these guys were very knowledgeable & friendly.
In the end (this won't always be typical) I was brought the final cost of the job & due to the low overhead cost of his outfit, & the extremely efficient work they did as a family business, the total cost was down to nearly HALF of the original estimate!
